Please take a moment to look at this ICRC Red Cross video on the role of Shelter in growing communities. Also take a moment to take off your Earthship hat and think about what types of shelters best support this outcome: Are Earthships the best solution? In every environment? For hurriances/tsunamis/floods/snow/drought/war?
I would suggest that against the ravages of Hurricanes, Tsunamis and War; Earthships are very viable. Whether they could readily offer a solution to floods, snow and drought, I’m not so sure. Equally the specification of an Earthship is often at the top end of affordability for most aspiring first-world homeowners, so the spec for a rammed-earth tyre dwelling would need to be sigificantly simpler if it were to be taken up by those living in third-world disaster and war-zones.
I’d like to know other’s thoughts about how Earthships fit into the “Shelter Effect”.
