This is the great recipe for our very own Earthship NZ drink from Phillipa. I’ll let her describe it best.
I have named it the Earthship NZ Zinger Shake. My intention was to include and identify the main cause : Earthship NZ.
I thought the name Zinger reflects a zest for life and conjures a sensation of the Fire element, with the emotion of love, which in Chinese Medicine relates to the Heart and Small Intestine primarily and also the body’s thermostat – San Jiao and the physical protector of the Heart – Pericardium. We have all been reminded after all recently, of how importatnt our loved ones are to each of us. As you can see the Coconut particularly activates the Heart function and many of the other ingredients help the common cold signs and symptoms, which will help people’s defenses against the cold elements. They nearly all have a warming pungent nature and taste, which reflects the Fire element.
Also, a lot of the ingredients benefit the Stomach and digestion, which relates to the Earth element. In Traditional Chinese Medicine : The Spleen and Stomach are the Yin/Yang partners of the Earth element and provide the Post Heaven Qi – energy to the whole system. The color of the Carrots reflects the color of the Earth element – Yellow/orange and the Goji Berries reflect the color of the Fire element – Red.
The texture of the drink can be determined by how much coconut cream is added in relation to the juice of the carrots. If made to a more creamy texture it may allow a sensation of feeling abundantly nourished and full.
The Shake being included in the name is appropriate I thought, as the drink needs to be shaken in a blender for one and reflects the recent Christchurch Earthquakes. This may be interpreted negatively or positively. Being an optimist, my vision and intention is to embrace the name, ‘shake,’ which positively reminds us of what we have survived and for Christchurch to be a leading example of moving forward despite the adversity of the natural disaster and embrace change, our survival skills, comraderie, warmth, love and what we still have and hold dear – an abundance of natural resources and our Earth!
I may add lemon juice zest at the end for taste, so will add the energetic nature to the ingredients
The Recipe
- 1 and half carrots
- 3 dates
- 1 oversized tablespoon of Goji berries
- 1 oversized cup of coconut milk
- approx. ¼ tsp. of cinnamon
- decent knob of fresh ginger
- rice milk
- hot or cold water to mix
- 1 tsp. of manuka honey (optional)
The color is very Earth – yellow/orange as I said and have made the texture quite thick due to the coconut milk, but it may be thinned with Rice milk and cold or hot water depending on hot/cold drink.
I have added Vitasoy Rice Milk – original, to thin it, which is Gluten Free and Lactose Free in case of Coeliac’s and Lactose intolerant people. Also hot water to thin it, so the quantities are as follows, which made 2 good sized cups/glasses. I must say my flat mate and I have sampled it and it tasted pretty damn good and we feel very replete, well nourished and warmed internally on this cold night and time after one cup!!
Phillippa.
NB: Note some of the contraindications re – Pregnancy.

Phillippa then followed up…
I awoke the following morning feeling rather warm in my inner abdomen, so thought that the drink may be too warming energetically for some people, especially if they have a tendency for internal heat.
So there are a few ingredient options we could add to the recipe to balance this out, (either one of maybe two of them depending on taste and cost).
The best ones which are in keeping with the Fire/Earth elements, would add to the taste of the drink and have the most beneficial actions are :
Apple : a cool and sweet nature and taste.
Strengthens the Heart – Fire element,
Tonifies Qi – energy
quenches thirst
reduces dryness
lubricates the Lungs
resolves mucus
Banana : cold and sweet
Clears heat
Lubricates the Lungs and Intestines
Lowers blood pressure
Helps alleviate alcohol intoxication
Cranberries : cooling and sour
Promotes urination and relieves painful urination
Strengthens the Kidneys and reproductive system
Orange (as a juice) : cool, sweet and sour
Lubricates the Lungs
Resolves mucus
Increases appetite
Strengthens the Spleen
Quenches thirst
Promotes body fluids
Strawberry : cool, sweet and sour
Lubricates Lungs
Promotes body fluids
Strengthens the Spleen
Detoxifies Alcohol intoxication
